A Ten Minute Reset for Moms Who Feel Overstimulated

By Parenting Contributor

When a room feels too loud and every small request arrives at once, adding a long self-care routine is rarely helpful. A ten-minute reset works because it removes input instead of giving you another list to complete.

Minute one choose a boundary

Tell the people around you what is happening in one sentence: I am taking ten quiet minutes and I will be back when the timer ends. If you are the only adult present, choose a safe moment in the family routine rather than trying to disappear in the middle of an active task.

Minutes two and three lower the volume

Turn off background media and silence notifications that can wait. Move away from the loudest part of the room. You do not need silence. Aim for noticeably less sound than before.

Minutes four and five put down the decisions

Write down anything you are afraid you will forget. Do not solve it. The note can hold the task while you pause. Give yourself permission to answer no messages and make no household choices for the next few minutes.

Minutes six through eight do one quiet thing

· Drink a glass of water slowly.

· Sit with your back supported and close your eyes.

· Stand by an open window and notice the outside light.

· Wash your face without doing the rest of a routine.

· Stretch your hands and shoulders gently.

Choose one option. More activities do not create a better break.

Minutes nine and ten choose the next smallest step

Look at the next part of the day and choose one action. It might be preparing a simple snack, starting bath time or moving one load of laundry. Leave the full list for later.

Make the reset easy to repeat

Use the same chair, timer and short phrase each time. Familiarity reduces the number of decisions needed to begin. The reset can happen in the morning, after work or before the evening routine.
