My Daughter Wants to Do It Herself 🦋
Every child goes through an independence key period around age 2-3. This article records the journey from "Mommy help me" to "I can do it myself" and a mother's reflections.
This morning, my 3-year-old daughter suddenly grabbed the spoon from my hand and said:
"Mommy, I want to do it myself!"
In that moment, I felt both surprised and moved.
Looking back over the past year, she has gone from completely depending on me to wanting to try everything by herself.
This process hasn’t been easy:
- Learning to eat by herself → the table was always a mess
- Trying to dress herself → buttons were misaligned
- Helping organize toys → chaos everywhere
But I didn’t stop her, because I know this is a necessary part of growth.
My Reflections 🌱
1️⃣ Allow kids to "help and make a mess" — that's where learning begins.
2️⃣ Give more positive encouragement — don’t pursue perfection.
3️⃣ Provide opportunities to try within safe boundaries.
4️⃣ Let children participate in age-appropriate household chores.
Independence isn’t about letting go, but wisely releasing.
May we all witness every step of our children’s growth.
