Why Is My Baby Bottle Leaking Around the Collar? A Product-Check Guide

By Parenting Contributor

A wet ring around the bottle collar does not always mean the bottle body is damaged. The source may be a tilted nipple, a vent that is not seated correctly, crossed threads, or parts from two similar-looking models.

Work through one check at a time. Changing several parts at once makes it difficult to learn what actually caused the leak.

Dry the bottle and find the starting point

Wipe the bottle, collar, nipple, cap, and base completely dry. Hold the assembled bottle over a sink and look for the first place moisture appears. Do not assume liquid running down the side began at the bottom.

Check the nipple and vent placement

Remove the collar and confirm the nipple is pulled evenly through it. If the model has a vent or internal insert, compare its direction with the official assembly diagram.

A folded edge or partially seated component can interrupt the seal even when the collar feels tight.

Reset the collar threads

Place the collar level on the bottle neck and turn slowly. If it catches immediately or sits at an angle, remove it and start again rather than tightening harder.

Inspect the threads for residue, warping, or visible damage. Replace only with a part confirmed for the same model and capacity.

A simple checklist

  • Use parts from one model only.
  • Seat the nipple evenly.
  • Align the vent according to the manual.
  • Start the collar level and tighten without forcing.

Frequently asked questions

Will tightening the collar more stop every leak?

No. Extra force cannot correct a folded seal, crossed thread, or incompatible part and may make removal harder.

Can I swap collars between two bottles of the same capacity?

Only if the manufacturer confirms the models share that component. Capacity alone does not prove compatibility.
